Random Encounter: Cat and Mouse (Dated, Closed)

Nov 5, Year 4

((Takes place at 1am in the morning))

"C'mon, we need to get out of here," The dark brown unicorn looked from left to right frantically.

"Not yet, I almost got it." The blue earth pony was digging out an object. A look of determination on her.

The unicorn slowly backed up into her, screaming at the surprise.

"Keep it down," The pegasus whisper-yelled, "We almost have the piece. Do you know how much this will go for?" The pegasus continued her digging.

"Do you know what they will do to us if they find us out after curfew?" The earth pony was shaking where he stood. His weapon was an old crossbow, looking like it had been through the war. A bit of dry blood on it, probably from its previous owner. The pegasus was carrying knives on her person. They had meager cloths on, probably looters.

She dug faster and faster, making more and more noise. They almost had it.

A teal-colored mare made a slow trot down the cracked streets of the city known as Manehatten. A pair of tinted flight goggles were placed firmly on her face, despite it not being light out anymore nor being a pegasus to make a real use out of them. Passing a side street, the mare paused in her place and glanced in one direction. She saw the green auras outlining some fellow ponies, but they were...digging in the ground?

Curiosity piqued, Forte slowly moved over to the green lights to investigate. Unable to see any details beyond the outlines of the ponies, their tools and the hole in the ground, she simply watched while standing behind them. Not speaking to avoid frightening them, she 'stared' at them, almost creepily.

The three ponies didn't notice at first. They continued digging up the sheet metal. Finally the unicorn noticed. "Hey, how are you?" her horn began glowing white lightly. The pegasus immediately stopped and turned. The earth pony lifted his crossbow with one hoof. They did not say anything, nor did they move beyond that. Their eyes fixed on the mare in the darkness.

Forte didn't flinch, even as the white outline of a weapon was pointed in her direction. "I'm just a fellow pony. I noticed you three and simply found myself curious about what you are doing." She replied in a calm voice, her lips remaining flat and expressionless. "You seem to be searching for something. Perhaps there is some way I can make myself of use to you?"

The earth pony lowered his weapon slightly, the look on his face sheer confusion.

"Is this bitch serious?" The pegasus stood up now, her wing grabbing a knife. She trotted half way to the mare. "Get the fuck out of here."

"Stop it," The unicorn scanned the sky nervously, "You'll attract more-"

"Shut up!" The pegasus snapped at her partner.

"Look we don't need your help, get out of here." The earth pony had now fully lowered his weapon. "We are fine."

The pegasus stayed where she was, an evil grin on her face. She tossed the knife in the air with her wing. "You best listen to him."

Forte took a step back and gave a simple nod, face remaining stoic. "As you wish. Be careful of any patrols that might come around. You know what happens to poor ponies who are caught out too late." She replied, slowly turning to trot away again. It wasn't rare for others to reject her assistance, but she still had to try and help. Or at least offer to.

"Wait!" The unicorn cried out and ran past the pegasus.

"What the fuck...?" The pegasus could not stop the unicorn as she ran to Forte.

"Please, please stay. It is dangerous around here at night." The unicorn was sincere. "You should not be out alone." She was whispering still scanning the sky nervously.

"Oh hay seeds." The earth pony turned slightly and shook his head.

"Are you serious?" The pegasus trotted up to reach them. The two then began arguing.

"She could get hurt or killed alone out here."

"How the hell is that our problem."

"Don't be like that..." The argument continued for a few moments before finishing.

"Fine, but she isn't getting any cut." The pegasus huffed back to the hole and continued her digging in the rubble.

"C'mon, its okay. You shouldn't be alone out here." The unicorn lead her to where he was standing, still scanning the sky nervously.

Forte paused and listened to the words that were exchanged, keeping her back turned to them the entire time. Only when the conversation ended did she turn and bow her head lightly. "I thank you, and I do not need any of whatever it is you are searching for. Knowing I am giving my assistance is reward enough." She replied calmly, slowly following the ponies back to their hole to wait for any directions she would be given.

"Is this pony for real?" The pegasus gave an annoyed sigh and continued her work. The earth pony shook his head more then went back to keeping an eye out. The Unicorn was the only one to acknowledge her.

"So, what are you doing out this late alone. The old Industrial District is incredibly dangerous." She would look at her in between scanning the darkness for danger. It was obvious she was jumpy.

"I almost...(grunt) got it." The pegasus was now struggling to pull the large metal sheet from the rubble. The earth pony went to help, setting down his weapon.

Thorin was patrolling the street with three of his squadmates, half listening to their conversation. He had been a conscript for a few days and already the appeal of nighttime partol was begining to wear thin.

He glanced down a sidestreet and spotted something. A small group of ponies outside. At night.

'Uh Seargent?'

The Seargent turned and looked at Thorin, who pointed at the group. He sighed and turned the squad down the street, speading out into a half skirmishing formation.

The Seargent took in a deep breath and bellowed:

'What are you doing out at night? Stay where you are!'

Forte didn't move a muscle as the command was barked, changing the field of view of her senses to spot the outlines of what were obviously four griffons. "It seems we have been found. Good luck every pony." She replied in the same monotone, emotionless voice as always despite the danger. She knew running is something she should do, but that usually ended up in a worse punishment than standing still if you were caught, and she couldn't outrun a griffon, not by a long shot.

"OH FUCK," The unicorn backed into a wall, his legs shaking.

"Shit," the earth pony picked up and raised his crossbow and hid behind some cover.

"Al-most-got-it." The pegasus continued pulling out the metal sheet. It was a large sheet, but almost from from the darkness's grasp.

"What do we do, what do we do?" The unicorn began to panic.

The earth pony lined up his sights on one of the griffons.

"Al-most..."

Jury was rooting around seperate from the group that was nearby. those ponies were to skiddish and to loud for their own safety, better them loose a paycheck rather than himself loose his job. he was quite calm until he heard the booming command from outside.

He quickly slinked into the nearest shadow that offered a vantage point and slipped off his salvage he had aquired this night and watched.

Somehow Thorin knew that this would all end in bloodshed.

One of the soldiers drew a crossbow and aimed it at the similary armed pony as the rest of the squad and Thorin moved closer, their bladed Talon Gauntlets clicking and scraping on the road.

'Drop the crossbow now!' shouted the crossbow Griffon.

Forte held her position just as she was told, watching the griffons closely while facing towards one of the walls she was now unable to see. "It would be wise not to agitate these figures." She replied simply and quietly to the pony with the crossbow. "Going peacefully will result in a lesser punishment than the course of action you are taking at this moment in time."

"Yeah, maybe if-there-guards-AHHH." She pulled out the large piece of sheet metal out. "YES!"

"If they are guerrillas, we are all as good as dead if the reach us." The earth pony was holding his position.

"Forget this, I'm out of here," The unicorn ran off down the street.

"Looser," The pegasus put the sheet on her back, grimacing under its weight. "Hey unicorn, if you can levitate this, you get his cut." She motioned to the sheet metal, "Well?"

"Here they come," the earth pony was fixed on one of the guards.

Forte turned her senses towards the pegasus who spoke to her, eventually turning away from the griffons. "I am so very sorry, but I cannot use my magic at this point in time. Good luck." She replied simply before beginning to run off. Running wasn't the most wise choice, but the situation with the pony and their crossbow made it the safer of her two options. Turning her senses back ahead, she did her best to stay safe, yet swift.

Jutry let our a quiet sigh. Doing anything but standing still when ordered was just plain stupid. Those unicorns are just gonna die tired, the smart ones would stay put and just give them a decent reason for scavenging.
He pondered the idea of aiding them but quickly dispatched it, saying these ponies were aiding the tram company would only fail when they would check records for them working. which none of them were. He kept to the shadows and got closer to listen to the ruckus going on below him.

'Stop him!' the Seargent yelled, and the crossbow Griffon quickly re-aimed at the fleeing unicorn and fired.

Realising simultaneously that this would probably cause the other ponies to act, Thorin and the other soldier rushed at the group, hoping to catch them before they got it into their heads to try and fight.

The bolt flew past the ponies and made its mark in the back of the unicorns head 20 feet or so down the street. The pony tumbled lifelessly into the darkness.

"FUCK!" The pegasus cursed and began dragging the sheet metal around the corner into an alleyway.

The earth pony fired his weapon, the bolt hitting the griffon that shot square in the right shoulder. "Yeah, this isn't good." He followed behind the pegasus into the alleyway.

"Those stupid bitches," the pegasus grunted as she tried to drag the metal into a safe place in the alley. "If we hide this in time, we could run and come back for it after loosing the pigeons."

"Alright," The earth pony prepared another bolt. "Better hurry, I'll hold them off as long as I can."

Forte turned her senses back towards a nearby sound, just in time to see the aura of the unicorn falling to the ground and slowly fade away to the lifeless white. Turning her attention back ahead of her, she stumbled slightly after clipping a trash can she was unable to sense early enough due to the distraction. She managed to keep her hoofing, however, and continued her trot away from the griffons. Mourning the loss of a pony would have to wait until later.

Jury sighed as the bolt took the life of the unicorn in the distance, his mind was warring between escaping with his goods or being a good samaritan and assisting these poor ponies.
He let out a sigh and looked around the room for anything that could help, he spies a pallete with a large box full of old lightbulbs. He pushed them to the nearest opening and heaved the box out into the streets below and yelled one word "SCATTER!"

The glass in the lighbulbs shattered, spreading thousands of razor sharp fragments over the street between Thorin and the charging soldier, and the scavenging equines.

Thorin reached the feild of glass first and ran over it, cutting up his unprotected rear paws and causing him to stumble and cry out in pain. The charging soldier took the new obstruction in his stride, extending his wings and hopping over the glass.

The seargent took to the skies and flew towards the ponies, leaving the crossbow Griffon to lie in the street whimpering and holding a talon to the bolt protruding from his shoulder.

The earth pony pokes around the corner takes quick aim and fires, missing the griffon in the air. "Damn it," he puts his back against the wall and reloads.

The pegasus quickly tried to bury the sheet metal, hiding most of it in the rubble, "C'mon lets go," she finished up and trotted to the earth pony hitting him with on hoof. She leaned down slightly so that he could get on her back. The earth pony fired a bolt blindly before getting on her back.

She took off fast, "Got to loose them, hold on." She flew low, weiving around the obstacles and buildings.

Forte hardly made a sound beyond her hoofsteps on the hard pavement underneath her. Turning a corner, she slipped into a window she managed to sense, taking deep breaths while resting with her back pressed firmly against the wall. Keeping her senses trained behind her, she kept careful watch of any possible griffons who had followed her.

Jury made his way through the building as quickly and quietly as he could manage with a bag full of metal pipes and clamps. he hopes that he can hide nearby and snag that sheet metal he saw the group find. he can always use sheet metal. especially when somepony else does the hard work.

The charging soldier stayed airborne until he reached the alleyway that the ponies had fled down, where he landed and ran in pursuit. The Seargent followed his soldier, running right past Thorin.

Thorin picked himself up and was struck with a moment of indecision on whether to help his wounded comrade, or pursue the pony. The lure of the hunt quickly overcame him and limped swiftly after Forte.

Forte kept her breaths constant and deep, doing her best to rest, yet remain silent at the same time. She slowly swept her senses around behind her to keep a lookout, pausing upon seeing the hazy outline that seemed to be in the shape of a griffon, the wall making it hard to tell completely.

Turning her senses back ahead of her, she slowly crept away from the wall, hoping to find a place to hide inside the ruined building.

Thorin limped into the entrance of the alleyway that he saw the unicorn run down. There he stopped and took in what he could. The alley was too dark for him to see very much, the dull lights of the street barely outlining the rubbish and debris that was piled against the walls and the few empty window frames that opened onto the alley. She had probably run down the alleyway and into the next street, but could have easilly hidden in the piles or though a window.

He sniffed the air, hoping to find some trace of the pony and was barely able to detect a fresh scent of pony sweat. Following this like an aubsurd tracking hound, he climbed through the window the unicorn had used and into the building.

Forte's ears perked up as the sound of a body hitting the floor reached her. Crouching down behind an old sofa to hide her form in the dark building, she turned her attention toward the source of the noise to spot the orange aura of the griffon hunting her. Her long tail lashed about behind her as she prepared to run if need be, showing the nervous state she was in and defying the cold expression on her face.

Turning her senses away from the griffon for the moment, she scanned the room for an escape route; ignoring the stairs that would simply trap her on the second floor. She did not like the position she was in, but her only viable exits were in the direction of the griffon she put her attention back onto.

Dropping through the window, Thorin paused to survey the room. A few partially boarded windows on the street side let a few greasy shafts of light enter what was once a lounge room. The lighter or more valuable items had already been stolen, leaving a pair of ruined sofas and a small pile of shattered wood that may have been a table. There was a doorway on the far wall leading into the rest of the building, the door itself hagning from its hinges after some great impact years ago.

The smell of the pony filled this room and as Thorin strained his ears he could hear the faint swishing of a pony tail against the ground.

'I know you are in here pony! Come out and surrender now and you will not be harmed' Thorin said, reading from an internal script drilled into him during his breif training

Forte stayed silent despite the deal that was offered to her, keeping her senses trained on the griffons. After the incident that made her lose her eyes, she hardly trusted the word of this enforcer. He was probably just going to stab her with whatever weapon he had on him then make her his dinner. She took a deep breath and silently let it out to keep her nerves calm.

Turning her attention to the other sofa in the room, she decided to press her luck and use the darkness to her advantage: she quietly ran to the other couch, knowing it was closer and at a better angle to the exit of the building. She held her new position, watching the griffon silently.

Thorin caught a glimpse of the unicorn as she darted between the sofas.

'Gotcha' He whispered to himself

He moved forwards as quietly as he could, his bladed gauntlets scraping on the floor. He stopped a few paces from the ruined peice of furniture and crouched ready to pounce, his excitement rising at the prospect of capturing the pony.

With a single flap of his wings and a push from his rear legs, he leaped over the sofa and turned towards it.

A few beads of sweat ran down Forte's forehead and along the rims of her goggles as her nerves were beginning to be tested by this griffon. He was coming closer to her, but she wouldn't simply let him have her. While keeping her senses on the hunter, she slowly and quietly moved around to the side of the couch while remaining hidden. As the griffon leaped over the couch, she took off for the door.

The sound of her hooves on the hard cement floor echoed through the room while she galloped for the exit, not caring about her silence anymore. She made her way outside and ran down another alleyway, keeping her senses on the building and the griffon inside.

Unable to see where she was running, the mare slammed into a group of empty trash cans in the alley, revealing her new position. The unexpected hit dazed her and rendered her unable to move for a few moments, knocking out her focus on her spell and rendering everything around her black.

Jury had been hiding in complete silence until a pony crashed into a large bunch of trash cans. he stayed hidden but kept watching and hoping that this wasnt going to turn bad, he hated getting involved in others matters. He could see this pony was a mare, he had been raised to always help a mare, his parents had always told him the importance of being a gentlecolt when it came to mares.

He quickly ran to the mare and began helping her up "You alright miss?" he said with haste.

As Thorin landed, the mare ran straight past him and through the door. He was not expecting that. Nor did he expect that his injured hind feet would be a problem.

Thorin let out a small whimper as the cuts and peices of glass still embedded in his paws stung, but the adrenaline born of excitement still flowed in his veins.

He would not let the pony, his prey escape.

He picked himself up and charged through the building, now heedless of his injuries and stopped on the street. A moment later there was a crash as someone ran into some rubbish bins and Thorin ran towards the noise.

Forte jumped ever so slightly as the hoof she didn't see coming touched her to help her up. Slowly regaining her composure, she activated her spell once more to see the aura of her helper. "Thank you very much kind stranger, but you must flee now." She replied simply, fixing her goggles that had gotten slightly out of position during the crash. She hoped the pony hadn't seen what laid behind them.

"I do not have the time to explain, just run to safety." She stated, moving away from the trash cans before starting to gallop away in the direction she had been heading previously.

He let out a quick sigh when the mare adjusted her goggles, of all the times to worry about fashion it had to be at night with griffon patrols flying about and prowling the streets. She began to gallop away so he decided to stay with the mare just in case she took another spill "id already be gone if you hadnt taken that spill miss," he looked ahead and found what he was looking for "quick follow me" he turned off into a ruined building "keep up otherwise your gonna get lost" he said weaving around some fallen debris down a long hallway.

As soon as there was enough room, Thorin spread his wings and tore after the pair of equines at low level as they entred a building he rolled on his side, tucked his wings in and bounded off the doorframe to land inside at top speed. He skidded a few feet and crouched, glaring at the ponies and ready to pounce on them should they move.

He let a out a low growl and said 'Surrender and come quietly, or I swear to Orion this will not be easy to clean up'

He was enjoying this far too much.

Forte entered the building behind Jury, having no problem following him as she kept up her speed, her thin frame helping her turn through the tight angles easier. Hopping over a fallen beam, she heard the griffon barreling into the doorway, resisting the urge to look back and keeping her senses ahead to make sure she didn't miss a single object in her path. She didn't know weather this pony was leading her to safety or death, but she didn't have a better option at this point in time.

Jury weaved between fallen debris and long abandoned furniture his mind raced for any way to escape this pursuing griffon without resorting to violence. He kept his pace fast slow enough so that he wouldnt miss any opportunities to escape, he finally spotted his and the mares salvation he leaps into a hole in a wall that he presumed led outside

Unfortunately for him and the mare it led to yet another room, and this one didnt have any way out other than the way they came in. the griffon was very close and this was very bad "Get behind me," he said to the mare turning to face the hole and the fast approaching griffon, this is the time when he wished he didnt leave his harpoon launcher at the workshop. he cursed under his breath and stared out of the hole.

Thorin chased the ponies through the building, following the sound of the clatter of their hooves upon the floor. He saw the ponies run through a hole in the wall and stop.

Thorin slowed to a walk and approached the wall, wary of a trap and carefully climbed though, keeping his eyes on the equines.

'Are you going to surrender now that you are cornered? I swear to you that nothing bad will happen to you despite leading me on this merry little chase'

Forte's face remained stone cold as she stepped back and away from the griffon she had her senses focused on. She stayed silent for a long few moments before slowly speaking up.

"How are we to determine your words as true, when so many of your compatriots would simply remove us on the spot?" She replied in an eerily calm voice. "You could be waiting for us to let down our guard. Is that not the truth?"

Jury kept his eyes on the griffon but couldnt help but be shaken by the mares words, she had a point the griffon could very easily make a pair ponies dissapear, "How do we know that as soon as we come out and surrender you wont kill us right then and there?"

Thorin sighs and removes his Talon gauntlets, letting the curved steel claws drop to the ground with a clatter.

'There, now I can only badly injure you' he says. 'Really, I would rather not hurt you'

This was true. Despite his natrual excitement at the prospect of the hunt, he had come here as a doctor, not a soldier. He did not really want to capture these ponies either, but the Guerellas did not take failure lightly.

'Now please, come with me. If I tell them that you did not resist, you will only be given time in a work camp instead of... a short drop and sudden stop'

Forte held her ground, able to see the hazy auras of the griffon's gauntlets falling to the floor, the sound confirming the image. Not moving a muscle, the unicorn simply opened her mouth to speak. "I apologize in advance, sir, but I still do not trust you. It is nothing against you personally, I simply do not trust any griffon after what your kind has done to me."
