Aella laughed.
"I think we will be making some fishermen very happy"
She pushed the pram to the end of the dock and tipped it onto its side, pouring its contents into the water. She righted the carriage and rolled it back

"Either way, it's not our problem any more," Sten said, dusting his claws. "Well that's that. Pint then home?"

Kroll nods slowly as he watches the last of the packages of white powder sink into the ink black water. "Let's go back to the bakery first and make sure no stragglers are hanging around. After that, sure, Sten. Pint, then home."
After scanning the street level to make sure that they weren't being watched, the captain motioned to Aella and Sten to start heading back the way that they came.

Sten broke into a lackadaisical stroll, smiling to himself with the satisfaction of a job halfheartedly done.
"So can I go now?" he said, bobbing behind Kroll. "...Sir?"

Kroll shook his head as the trio headed back towards the bakery. "Once this is wrapped up and we reach headquarters, I will dismiss you. Until then, you're to remain with Aella and I. Do I make myself clear, Softclaw?" he asked with a somewhat bitter tone.

Re: Kicking the Hornets Nest
Before long, the trio of griffons managed to make their way back to the bakery, slipping into the hole that was made in the back. "Okay, let's get the remaining packages and dump them before those knuckleheads..."
The captain trailed off as he stepped into the room where the crates of white powder had been stored in the bakery's back room, which was now virtually empty, save a few trace amounts of the powder that rested on the floor. "...Come back." the tercel swore as he jerked his head downwards, giving the floor a sharp stomp in frustration. "Where the hell did it all go?!" he asked the room as if expecting an answer, turning to Aella and Sten with a look of bewildered annoyance. "It's not like those crates just got up and walked away...Arrgh, they must've come back when we left...damn it!"

Sten kept his face blank and his big beak shut. Cap might've been angry, but that did mean he had to give him a reason to be mad at him. He glanced at Aella for any hint of solidarity.

Aella looked around the room disbelievingly. They had been gone for a minute or two at most, and the ponies had cleared the area out entirely. She met Stens gaze and gave him a worried grimace.

Kroll lowers his head and takes a deep breath, massaging the bridge of his beak as he tries to calm down. "Alright, alright. Let's just fall back to the observation point across the street. We'll pack up and move on back to Headquarters before the sun comes up." he says as he starts to make his way toward's the bakery's entrance. "Come on, let's get out of here."

"Yessir, yessir," Sten said, brightly.
He jogged briskly out of the room and into the bakery. He would've gone on into the streets, but he noticed that the displays had been only lightly ransacked since they'd gone. There was still an iced bun or two left behind the counter. Sten took one in passing, and brushed the glass off it.
It... it looked good enough to eat...

Aella turned a blind eye to Sten swiping a bun. It was the proceeds of crime, so it made sense for a member of the guard to confiscate it. She followed close behind Kroll. HQ and rest sounded good around now.

Kroll cautiously moved out into the street, keeping his crossbow at the ready as he scanned the streets for trouble. Seeing nothing, the captain motioned to Aella and Sten to move up the street towards the observation post they had set up earlier that night.

Re: Kicking the Hornets Nest
Aella gave Sten a thumbs up and smiled broadly. This time, even in failure there was victory. The hen trotted along behind Kroll for a moment before remembering that she had left her polearm in the store. She gave a garbled explanation and bolted back into the building, searching for her weapon.
The griffoness returned to where she had left it, evidenced by the hole in the roof from her less than stellar weapon control. The ponies had somehow broken the shaft in two and left it upon the floor. Aella grumbled to herself as she retrieved the bits and jogged back to the group.

Kroll watched Aella dash back into the bakery with a confused look before seeing her come back out with the broken remains of her polearm. "Oh for the love of--" the captain grumbles as his head sunk into his free claw. "Aella, how many times have I explained the idea that, broken or not, you should never leave your weapon behind?" said the tercel in a sour, stern tone.

"That should never even be a possibility." Kroll said bluntly as he started to make his way into the building where the trio had set up their observation post. "Mistakes like that can cost lives, Aella. I expect you to be more mindful of such matters in the future. Do I make myself clear ?"
The night's mission had not gone as well as the captain would have liked, and even though he had no intent to take out his frustrations on the hen, her absentmindedness certainly wasn't alleviating his current demeanor.

Kroll nodded as he moved into where they had set up their observation post, moving aside the bear traps he had placed in front of the door before allowing Aella and Sten to enter after him. "Alright, we're on the clock, you two." the captain grumbled as he started packing up the mounted binoculars. "Let's get this crap ready to go in forty-five minutes, alright? Sooner we finish, sooner we go home."

"Exactly. We still have no idea how big their operation is, so I doubt this will put them out of comission." sayid Kroll as he finished packing up the binoculars, moving to browse over the extra weapons he brought along to make sure they were all accounted for before storing them away properly. "Still, this should be enough to slow them down or cripple 'em for a bit...how are we looking on the packing, you two?"

Kroll nods as he slings his share of the loaded equipment over his back. "Once we get return, I'll need you two to make sure this gear gets its way back to the armory. I'll need to start filling out paperwork so this mission and its results are well-documented for future reference. After that's all said and done, you two will be dismissed to go about your usual. Kroll shook his head as he weaved past Sten, heading out the door first. "That won't be necessary, Softclaw. You and I just need to have a quick chat once we get back, and then you can be well on your way to go do whatever it is you occupy your time with when you're not doing your job."
Raising his crossbow up, the captain began to slowly make his way toward's the building's exit, taking a moment to scan the streets before stepping outside, motioning to his comrades to follow him. "Alright, let's get out of here. Sooner we leave, sooner we get back."

'A quick chat', Sten thought glumly. Because a dressing down by this buzzard is just what I need right now.

Kroll shrugged as he, Aella and Sten began to make the trek back from the Eastern Residential district to Headquarters.
"As much as a better weather schedule would be, I doubt the Council would care to make any adjustments to it unless it began to personally affect them." the captain said as he took a left down the street, stopping for a moment as he had an small epiphany.
"In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the only reason why the weather changes at such a delayed rate around here..." the tercel said with a smirk as he continued moving onward.

"It's not what you know, it's who you know," Sten said, prosaically. "The system's always been screwy like that."
I mean, he thought, it is a monarchy after all. You couldn't say that was the root of all evil, but it was sure as heck a big part of it.

"That's just it, Softclaw. I'm fairly ceratain the members of the Council weren't elected or anything of the sort, they were just sort of plopped down into a position of power and that was that." said the captain smirks, shaking his head.

Re: Kicking the Hornets Nest
Kroll shook his head as he continued down the streets. "Only place in the Kingdoms I've been in is Aquillae, but believe me when the stupidity of nobility reaches far and wide, and you don't need to be in their immediate presence to feel its after effects. As a matter of fact, some noble's kid was suddenly put in charge of a squad I was attached to for a bit during the war. That tercel was more wrong than a soup sandwich, let me tell you. Wore his armor backwards a few times, didn't know that swords had to be sharpened...couldn't even tell a longbow from a crossbow."
The captain paused his story for a moment as he turned to the next street. "This kid...I can't believe it. He'd spend more time trying to come up with cool sounding names for battle plans then actually make the damn things, and actually tried to plead with the enemy for a 'time-out' in the middle of a skirmish so he could preen!"
Kroll sighed wistfully as he and the others continued walking, the recognizable shape Headquarters now visible through the morning gloom that still blanketed the air over the streets.
"I know it sounds bad but we put serious thought into killing him; even worked out a way to make it look like it was an accident or his own fault. Luckily for him though, he managed to break his wing while trying to open a ration and got sent home. Son of a bitch is probably being hailed as a war hero, up to his eyes in swooning hens." he said with a hint of ire.

Sten raised an eyebrow.
"That right?" he said. "Makes you wonder how we won, with lads like that in charge. Lions led by chickens, I guess."
Yes, the strength of the griffon infantry had won the war, everyone said. Except if that infantry was anything like Sten, then that didn't really hold up to scrutiny. Just what had won it then?
Well, that was someone else's problem for now.

Kroll chuckled as he heard Aella's question, and he shook his head as he replied.
"Your guess is as good as mine, I'm afraid. I was out when it happened, but that's what I was told he did."
The captain had begun to ease up slightly on his surveils of the street as the group got closer to Headquarters, and he was looking forward to taking a power nap in his office before starting more paperwork. He still wasn't happy about the ponies that managed to escape, but the substances they had destroyed was certainly a plus, if not a small victory.

Sten made a little "tch" noise and shook his head. Improbable accidents weren't an unheard of way of getting rid of unwanted officers. Hell, even B company had resorted to the old "he tripped and fell on his own sword" routine that one time.

Re: Kicking the Hornets Nest
Kroll nodded to the side in agreement as the trio reached the entrance to Headquarters, the guards posted outside looking moderately peeved and sleep-deprived as they occasionally glanced up at the clock that shows when their shift ends.
"Well, here we are...home sweet home." the captain said with a sigh as he moves past the guards, taking the opportunity to cuff upside the head one that had begun to doze off while leaning against his polearm. The guard let out a squawk and staggered from his rude awakening, scrambling to a position of attention as he gave the passing tercel a quick salute, the guard parallel following suit in order to avoid a similar fate.
Once inside, Kroll turned his attention to Aella and Sten, taking a moment to rub some sleep from his eyes before giving them thier orders. "Alright you two, go on and drop this gear back off at the armory and then come meet me in my office for debriefing. Don't keep me waiting." he said with a dismissive wave before turning around and trudging off down the hall towards his office.
