I personally just say he's a very powerful and very evil unicorn. The whole cloud of shadows form he had is probably the spell that was placed on him. Celestia did say he was cursed into shadow.

Idk, his horn has some very unique properties that as far as we know, no other unicorn has. For example, His sword looks sharp, and although Horn Sharpening is plausible it looks far too sharp for just reshaping it.

Also, his horn was cut off, and somehow regrew, AND caused corruption where it dropped.

He has access to extremely dark magic, and although we know Celestia and Twi can perform it, it seems he can perform this corruption magic with little to no effort. Even Twi and Tia's eyes are corrupted as they use it while Sombra's remains "Normal".

more specifically, it's like a pony becomes a nightmer after some corruption oor dark curse or enchantment or... *magic*

I would say that he is a unicorn corrupted by shadows, and possibly the source is some sort of crystal, hence the use of crystal and shadow magic. Furthermore, it could account for his lack of speech. His corruption might have been brought about by his own doing. I believe he is simply a unicorn, who was corrupted by some outside force. While no canon evidence exists, it seems like a logical course, especially since no other unicorns look like that (based on what I have seen)
